Grace also works in batch mode. Instead of calling xmgrace, try the following:
exec gracebat $output_filename -hardcopy -hdevice EPS -printfile $output_filename.eps
No need to set the display variable ;-)

  My boss found me a fix for it:

  array set env {DISPLAY localhost:10.0}

  I guess the display needs to be on for the exec xmgrace call, I dont know why, but it works so I won't ask any questions.
