Adrian,
  Which VMD build are you running on that machine? The 32-bit or
the 64-bit build? If you know that there's something wrong with your
ATI driver, then this is undoubtably a prime candidate for the source
of your VMD troubles. What does glxinfo say when you run it on that
machine. Do you get warnings/errors from glxinfo?
