Paul,
  There's the culprit. If you're running the 64-bit distribution of
Linux on your machine you need to make sure that you have the 32-bit
and 64-bit OpenGL libraries installed. Your machine is missing libGLU
for some reason. Since you're running VMD 1.8.2, it's the 32-bit
version of that library that is missing.

What happens if you do this?:
  glxinfo

  John Stone
  vmd_at_ks.uiuc.edu
