Hi,
It's always interesting reading the nVida Linux support forum to
see what sorts of things people are running into with different
driver versions. It would seem from a great many of the comments
I read there that 6629 was a very stable driver release relative
to the more recent versions. Some people are using the new 7x00
series drivers without problems, but quite a few are running into
various kinds of problems with the 7x00 series.

Here's a question, when PyMol and/or VMD bite the dust, are there
any syslog messages from the nVidia drivers? I.e. "NVRM" messages
or similar? Does changing the NVAGP mode in the driver options
have any effect on PyMol or VMD behavior? How hot are the cards that
crash running? In order to check it out, try running "nvidia-settings"
(installed in /usr/bin/nvidia-settings when drivers are installed)
and see what it says under the "thermal monitor" tab. Various people
on the nVidia Linux support channel have been talking about cards
that are running very hot crashing and doing bad things with newer
drivers, apparently older drivers didn't cause the cards to get
so hot. Another thing that might be worth testing is to see if
checking the "Disable use of enhanced CPU instruction sets" option
in the "OpenGL settings" tab of the nvidia-settings tool has any
effect on the stability of PyMol or VMD.

As Warren says, I'm convinced these problems are entirely an
issue of the nVidia drivers, and or an interaction between the
new nVidia drivers and various other Linux runtime libraries
that is causing the crashes that are affecting PyMol and VMD.

Sadly, I haven't encountered any of these symptoms on any of
the machines here in our lab yet, so the best I can do is
try and help solve this by having you guys do more driver tests.
