We agree this would be nice to have; Fltk doesn't provide that sort of
widget out of the box but one could probably be created out of lower-level
widgets.

Yes, this should probably be at least an option. We recently changed
how graphing works so that it uses a Tcl callback; that way you can define
your own callback function to do the graphing however you want. Have a
look at the file graphlabels.tcl in the $VMDDIR/scripts/vmd directory if
you're interested.
